Parce qu’on est dans une époque de conflits, et que chaque guerre, chaque crise économique renvoie les individus, les sociétés civiles, vers leurs besoins les plus essentiels : se loger, s’habiller, se nourrir. Et le constat est amer : un·e citadin·e ne sait plus cultiver une plante, un·e paysan·ne dépend presque exclusivement de quelques grosses multinationales pour s’approvisionner en semences. En Grèce, en Syrie, ailleurs, les populations déstabilisées par la crise, la guerre, recherchent des semences. En Syrie, en Irak, berceau des céréales, les banques de semences ancestrales ont été détruites systématiquement par les occidentaux : elles représentaient un patrimoine inestimable de semences anciennes domestiquées par des générations de paysan·nes. Et il est trop dangereux de confier ce patrimoine à quelques « banques génétiques » difficiles d’accès pour le paysan ou la paysanne. Ne pas oublier aussi les sanglantes « émeutes de la faim » de la décennie passée (du début du 21ème siècle), urbaines pour la plupart, dans un contexte de spéculations sur les céréales, et de perturbations climatiques.

Industrial agriculture is dispossessing us of our know-how
L’agriculture industrielle nous dépossède de nos savoir-faire
Today, genetically engineered plants globally cover an agricultural area equivalent to that of Western Europe. Since 2001, it has been known that the ancient maize collections of Mexico, cradle of this culture, are contaminated by GMO maize imported from the United States. These GMOs that they want to impose on us will in no way solve famine and malnutrition, or diseases of plants and humans. On the contrary, they are a danger to the environment and to health. We also know, at the agronomic level, that most plant diseases are created today by industrial agriculture. The monocultures currently practiced by extremely simplified agrarian systems are causing irreversible genetic erosion, leading to future famines. They are an insult to the boundless ingenuity of generations of peasants who, thanks to them, have been able to survive. The monopoly of agribusiness in a standardized and globalized market caused the destruction of these millennial agrarian systems which had provided food for generations.
Aujourd’hui, les plantes manipulées génétiquement recouvrent, au niveau mondial, une surface agricole équivalente à celle de l’Europe de l’Ouest. Depuis 2001, on sait que les collections de maïs anciens du Mexique, berceau de cette culture, sont contaminées par du maïs OGM importé des Etats-Unis. Ces OGM qu’on veut nous imposer ne résoudront en rien la famine et la malnutrition, ou les maladies des plantes et des humain·es. Elles sont au contraire un danger, pour l’environnement, pour la santé. On sait aussi, au niveau agronomique, que la plupart des maladies des plantes sont créées aujourd’hui par l’agriculture industrielle. Les monocultures actuellement pratiquées par des systèmes agraires simplifiés à l’extrême entraînent une érosion génétique irréversible, porteuse de famines à venir. Elles sont une insulte à l’ingéniosité sans limite de générations de paysan·nes qui, grâce à elle, ont pu survivre. Le monopole de l’agro-industrie sur un marché standardisé et mondialisé a provoqué la destruction de ces systèmes agraires millénaires qui avaient permis à des générations de se nourrir.

While there were thousands of food species on the planet, today they are rapidly disappearing and the world’s diet relies on a very small number of plant species. For example, in France, 700 varieties of oats kept in INRA freezers were burned, a genetic heritage that goes up in smoke, because it is expensive to keep, and that the draft horses have disappeared, them of which oats were the main fuel. But who knows if, one day, we won't have to go back to animal traction? In animal husbandry, the disaster is just as serious. The consequence is that fragility, diseases and epidemics develop without restraint, exacerbated by inbreeding. In the past, each country, each valley had its variety adapted to the terroir. There were many exchanges between peasants. The varieties were traveling. In the 1950s, in China, 10,000 varieties of rice were used, each with its own qualities. But industrial agriculture requires homogeneous and stable varieties, the opposite of the selection criteria for peasants who work on “populations”, and who practice “mass” selection. Populations where there is a lot of diversity, adaptability, evolution, resistance to the fluctuating constraints of the environment. Quite the opposite of industrial “varieties”. It is essential to understand these data because they jeopardize the agricultural future of the planet, while making us believe that they are the only possible way to ensure the feeding of a humanity in demographic expansion.

Il est essentiel de comprendre ces données car elles hypothèquent l’avenir agricole de la planète, tout en nous faisant croire qu’elles sont la seule voie possible pour assurer l’alimentation d’une humanité en expansion démographique.

The equation is simple: the disappearance of peasants means the disappearance of varieties and the know-how attached to them. This is why it is said that peasants and gardeners are the custodians of seeds, and that we must increase their installation. For all these reasons, we must conserve all the possible diversity of old varieties, and their free and open access, because they are the seeds of the future. The only guarantee of their survival is to be grown in our gardens, not to be kept in fridges or gene banks. Fortunately, the richness and diversity of different food traditions still resist the standardization of tastes and productions, even if from one continent to another the situation is very different. This film is intended as a tool for learning to make your own seeds, which is not very difficult, costs nothing, is even a real pleasure. This knowledge should not remain in the sole hands of specialists who privatize access to seeds through patenting, through the creation of sterile hybrid varieties, all protected by increasingly restrictive legislation and at the orders of multinationals. Making your own seeds is a free act, which allows you to demystify this knowledge, and to be autonomous. On the contrary, it is a matter of a common heritage to be reappropriated, protected and made fruitful.
L’équation est simple : la disparition des paysan·nes, c’est la disparition des variétés et des savoir-faire qui leur sont attachés. C’est pour cela que l’on dit que les paysan·nes et les jardiniers et jardinières sont les gardien·nes des semences, et qu’il faut multiplier leur installation. Pour toutes ces raisons, il nous faut conserver toute la diversité possible des variétés anciennes, et leur accès libre et gratuit, car elles sont les semences du futur. La seule garantie de leur survie est d'être cultivées dans nos jardins, pas d’être conservées dans des frigos ou des banques de gènes. Heureusement, la richesse et la diversité des différentes traditions alimentaires résistent encore à l’uniformisation des goûts et des productions, même si d’un continent à l’autre, la situation est très différente. Ce film se veut un outil pour apprendre à faire soi-même ses semences, ce qui n’est pas très difficile, ne coûte rien, est même un réel plaisir. Ce savoir ne doit pas rester dans les seules mains de spécialistes qui privatisent l’accès aux semences par le brevetage, par la création de variétés hybrides stériles, toutes protégées par une législation de plus en plus restrictive et aux ordres des multinationales. Faire soi-même ses semences procède d’un acte gratuit, qui permet de démystifier ce savoir, et d’être autonome. Il s’agit au contraire d’un patrimoine commun à se réapproprier, à protéger et à faire fructifier.
