Manual pollination of Cucurbitaceae whose flowers are far smaller requires much more meticulous care and patience. With melons, where 80% of the female flowers abort spontaneously, manual pollination is less efficient than insects. A success rate of no more than 10-15% can be expected. In contrast, the success rate of manual pollination of watermelons is 50-75%. The rate for cucumbers is 85%.
يتطلّب التلقيح اليدوي للقرعيّات ذات الأزهار الأصغر حجمًا عناية أكثر وصبرًا أكبر. بالنسبة إلى البطيخ الأصفر، تجهض 80 بالمئة من الأزهار المؤنثة تلقائيًّا، فيكون التلقيح اليدوي أقل فعّالية من التلقيح بوساطة الحشرات. لا يمكن توقّع معدّل نجاح يتخطّى نسبة 10 إلى 15%. في المقابل، يتراوح معدّل النجاح في البطيخ الأحمر بين 50 و75%. أمّا معدّل النجاح للخيار هو 85%.

عند إتمام التلقيح اليدوي، تُغلق الأزهار المؤنثة برفق وبشكل جيّد كما كانت في الليلة السابقة. عند الحصاد، للعثور على الثمار الناتجة عن التلقيح اليدوي، توضع علامة أو شريطة ملوّنة على الشمراخ (حامل النورة).

If a bee has the bad idea of coming and collecting the nectar from the female flower that is currently being pollinated, the flower should be removed. Bees carry a mixture of pollen from other plants and cross-pollination would be inevitable.
إن ظهرت نحلة أو حشرة تقوم بجمع الرحيق من زهرة مؤنثة تمّ تلقيحها، يجب إزالة تلك الزهرة. يحمل النحل خليطًا من حبوب الطلع من نباتات أخرى ولا يمكن تفادي التلقيح المختلط حينها.
