In Europe extremely restrictive legislation obliges seed producers to register their varieties in an official catalogue which imposes very strict selection criteria. In France, for example, seeds authorized for sale must be listed in the official SEMAE (formerly GNIS) catalogue. This system only reinforces the domination and near-monopoly of large seed companies like Bayer/Monsanto. Failure to comply with this rule has, for example, resulted in years of lawsuits against the Kokopelli association which markets seeds produced by a network of seed producers, most of which are not listed in the official catalogue.
En Europa, una legislación extremadamente restrictiva obliga a los y las productoras de semillas a registrar sus variedades en un catálogo oficial que impone criterios de selección muy estrictos. En Francia, por ejemplo, las semillas autorizadas para la venta deben figurar en el catálogo oficial del SEMAE (antiguo GNIS). Este sistema no hace más que reforzar el dominio y el casi monopolio de las grandes empresas semilleras como Bayer/Monsanto. El incumplimiento de esta norma ha provocado, por ejemplo, años de pleitos contra la asociación Kokopelli, que comercializa semillas producidas por una red de productores y productoras de semillas, la mayoría de las cuales no figuran en el catálogo oficial.
