To prolong their germination capacity, keep them in the freezer.

Para nos livrarmos deles muito facilmente, colocamos as sementes por alguns dias no congelador. Colocamos uma etiqueta com o nome da variedade, o nome da espécie e o ano da produção no interior do pacote, pois as vezes acontece do escrito do lado de fora do pacote se apagar. 3/ As sementes de feijões possuem uma faculdade germinativa máxima durante três anos. Para prolongá-la podemos conservá-las no congelador.

Para a triagem, retiramos os feijões de tipos estranhos que testemunham de uma polinização cruzada. Retiramos também os feijões machucados ou deformados ou infestados por carunchos. O caruncho (Acanthocelides obtectus), é um pequeno inseto que bota seus ovos sob a vagem, na planta ou ainda no momento da secagem dos grãos.

Podemos também pisar sobre elas. Depois que os feijões foram batidos, os passamos sobre uma peneira que retém os feijões e as vagens vazias e deixa passar as pequenas sujeiras. A secagem deve durar entre duas a três semanas após a colheita para permitir o amadurecimento dos grãos. Para conferir se as sementes estão realmente secas, basta morder uma delas suavemente: se o dente não deixar nenhum traço, a secagem está completa.
